About 25 minutes from Narragansett, Newport is an easy day trip with a lot packed into a small area. Start with the Cliff Walk, a paved and rocky path that runs along the shoreline behind the mansions. You can hop on at one of several access points along the path. Nearby, Bellevue Avenue is lined with well-known estates like The Breakers and Marble House, both open for tours.
Down by the harbor, Thames Street is the main stretch for shops, casual food, and bars. You will find everything from lobster rolls and raw bars to coffee shops and small boutiques. Bowen’s Wharf and Bannister’s Wharf are good spots to sit by the water or book a harbor cruise. If you want time on the water without planning ahead, look for public sailings that run throughout the day in summer.
Parking can take some patience in peak season, especially midday. Try going early, or head in later in the afternoon when day visitors start to clear out. If you are up for it, sunset along Ocean Drive is worth the short drive.
