Providence is located about 45 minutes north and offers a change from the beach. Downtown is compact and walkable, especially around the Providence Riverwalk, where you can follow the paths along the water and cut through different parts of the city.

Food is a big draw here. Federal Hill is known for Italian restaurants, bakeries, and specialty shops, while other neighborhoods have a mix of casual spots, breweries, and newer restaurants. The RISD Museum is one of the top art museums in the region, with everything from ancient artifacts to contemporary work, and is well worth building part of your visit around.

If you are visiting in the evening, check if WaterFire is scheduled. The fires are lit along the river after dark and draw a crowd, with vendors and live music nearby. It is one of the more unique events in the area and is one of the best times to view the city.
